Share interacting with DB

Hello -

For one of my alfresco share pages(workflow), I would like to retrieve a dynamic list of lookup values from a table in a database and display them as a drop down.  I have an ftl for the drop-down, but I'm not sure how to do the wiring so that a DAO can be called to retreive and supply the values to the form model(thereby to the ftl).

Any suggestions or pointers towards that topic would be highly appreciated.
