Ruby-on-rails

When do people think Alfresco will support Ruby-on-rails?     I saw a post or two on other languages, but I would like to open up further discussion on the topic of Ruby specifically.

I'm contemplating a conversion from my existing open-source content mangement platform.  It only supports JSP/servlets.   It is very cumbersome to integrate with and customize.   

I feel that in order for me to migrate to a new platform, I would want it to support Ruby for development of dynamic pages along with those from a light and nimble content management system.   Alfresco appears to be a candidate, and a deciding factor for our organization will be Ruby on Rails support.

What type of timetable / development appetite is there for Ruby support?

Hi Mike,

Using the Alfresco Web Service API it is possible to access Alfresco from Ruby.  In fact before the Christmas break I started on a small proof of concept that shows how this can be done.

It would be nice if we could start to put together a Ruby Library for Alfresco, in much same way as we have done for PHP, that encapsulates some the concepts we have in Alfresco and thus make them available to Ruby developers.

At the present time supporting Ruby is not high on our priority list although there does seam to interest in it.  I would imagine we would look to the community to help us with development.  Perhaps this is something we could setup in the New Year?

Hi.

Using the Alfresco Web Service API it is possible to access Alfresco from Ruby.

Alternativly we could use JRuby to integrate Alfresco and Ruby on Rails soon.

… we are almost to the point of having Ruby on Rails and RubyGems working.

I think it would be cool to have both approaches - the web service route allows "pure" Ruby users to access Alfresco; having JRuby as one of the embedded Alfresco script languages would allow it to be used from the "inside".  Our first internal scripting engine will be Rhino (Javascript) as part of 1.3 - that could be used as a pattern for a JRuby integration.

Hi Gert,

Yes this may be worth looking into.  I've looked at JRuby before and it provides a nice way for Java and Ruby to co-exist.

I was thinking about starting a project on the forge around our support for Ruby and ultimately Ruby-On-Rails.
