Repository configuration

I'm trying to install Alfresco on a FreeBSD6.2 machine on existing Tomcat 6 and PostgreSQL 8.2 installations.

I've copied the alfresco.war to <CATALINA_HOME>/webapps.

I've created a PostgreSQL user and a database for Alfresco.

I'm using this page to try to figure out how to configure Alfresco:

The guide at that URL is kind of messy. I can't really figure out which of parts of it apply to my case, i.e. which configuration files I have to create/modify.

What are the steps I need to take to get the mentioned setup to run?

This section talks about the extensionRoot directory. Can you explain me what does a fresh install have to do with extensions?

Try installing, configuring and running Alfresco using the Alfresco-installed Tomcat.  Once you understand the configuration overrides (with the help of the Wiki page mentioned), you'll be able to apply the appropriate modifications to your own Tomcat instance.  There is a good book and courses available as well.
