properties, types, aspects apply to sub-folders and content?

Do the properties and aspects of a folder with a particular folder type apply to its sub-folders and content automatically?  Or do we need to specifically configure it so this is the case?

No, properties types and aspects do not apply to children.   Only access control lists are inherited.
