Elsewhere  I've reported not being able to use Alfresco despite what appeared to be a seamless installation using these instructions. However I do have a moodle running on the same box listening on Port 8000, would this account for my problem?

Nope, port 8000 should be irrelevant.

What do you see when you try to run alfresco?    How are you trying to start alfresco?  What OS are you using?   What version ?

And what's in your alfresco log file.  If you don't have an alfresco log file then what do you have running?

I have installed Labs 3 Stable fro Linux downloaded from here http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Labs_3_Final_download_files on Ubuntu 8.04
I installed using the wiki instructions here - http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Installing_Alfresco_on_Ubuntu_7.10
and started alfresco with the command sudo /opt/Alfresco/alfresco.sh start

I'm not sure how I access it but if I try a browser I get a "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at xxxxxxxx.org:8080.
