I like that there is a feature of an icon next to each space, where you can click on it and its suppose to allow you to open a CIFS connection to the space.  The URL tag it gives is file://///servernamea/spacename

That does not seem to work in vista or osx.  I can goto smb://servername/alfresco just fine so I know its working, I can use IP address or name.

What is needed to get it to work with "file://///"?

got the same problem.
Maybe the two extra "/"  are needed to avoid interpreting the following "/" ?
My guess is that it somehow was forgotten during software engeneering process.
Whatever, I wouldn't be surprised if there is nothing we can do about it, except for wating for bug fixing.

Ok, let me clarify.

This is with Internet Explorer under IE.

Simply putting file://172.16.1.51 works fine for me.
putting in file://TREBLEA does not.

I think the path being given by Alfresco is likely fine, but for whatever reason the box is not broadcasting its hostname information, and I am not sure why.  It does not show up in network neighborhood.  The workgroup is set fine.  If I do an nmblookup it does not show up, unless I unicast the nmblookup directly to the box like:

nmblookup -U 172.16.1.51 \* -S

so it seems to have to do with the browsing/notification parts of it giving out its hostname to the broadcast address.
