I know this is probably not new, but I am a newbie on Alfresco.

Is it possible to have Alfresco Document Library point to a Shared folder on a Windows Server.  I would remote users to gain access to the public folder on my Windows server through the Alfresco interface and still allow my local LAN users to keep that network drive mapping.

Thanks so much in advanced for your help

No your local users cannot and should not access Alfresco's private filesystem directly since that would be bypassing things like alfresco security.      You will need to change the drive mapping.    Alfresco's private filesystem can be on any network accessable filesystem.

Sounds reasonable.  Where does Alfresco keep the documents that are uploaded to the library?

There's a configuration setting called "dir.root" that specifies  where alfresco stores its content and indexes.
e.g.  dir.root=/srv/alfresco/data/live

There is also a finer grained control should you need it to store the content and indexes separately.
dir.contentstore=${dir.root}/contentstore
