MS Office file locked after online edit

Hi,

On a regular basis we experience difficulties with online edit of Office files (Alfresco 4.2.f on Ubuntu server).

When a user edits a file online Alfresco shows the file is locked. When the user finishes this message disappears from Alfresco but unfurtunately when another user tries to edit that file online Office (e.g. Excel) tells this user the file is already locked for editing by another user.

The only way to fix this is to delete the file and upload the latest version again.

Cataline.out does not show any errors.

Does anyone experience this as well and is there a solution to this problem?

Kind regards,

Frank

We have been running into the same issue. A couple of possible issues that I've come across it being is. Multiple users try to edit the file at the same time. Or a user's AD credentials recently changed and they didn't put in the new password when prompted by the sharepoint protocol.

We noticed it happens at random intervals. We even have 1 user working on Excel files in a particular site. He is the only one online editing files in that site and even he has this problems.

Has anyone else come across this problem and found a solution for it?

Right now I advise users to do offline editing, but that is not really a good solution. Especially if the users are used to Google docs.

Kind regards,

Frank

You mean this:

You have to change web-client-config.xml
C:\Alfresco\tomcat\webapps\alfresco\WEB-INF\classes\alfresco\web-client-config.xml
Change http to webdav (webdav)

What they discuss in this topic is the online edit not being available. With us it is available, but some how files get read-only (locked on file level) after the online edit.

@pacco_robin,

I had a question about changing the web-client-config.xml. If I change it from http to webdav what am I essentially doing? Is this only for the sharepoint or are there other functions this setting is used for?

Hi ESWBitto,

Somebody has to correct me when I am wrong, but you change the protocol that you use for editing only.

Check this for WebDAV: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebDAV#Alternatives_to_WebDAV

I haven't tried it yet. I am not sure if it relates to the original problem I experience.

For now we increased memory to 8GB. I somehow suspect my machine/Alfresco not being fast enough te remove the file lock after someone finishes editing a file.

What I noticed yesterday…I had a file with this particular problem. Renaming the file didn't solve it, giving it some time didn't help. But when I rebooted the server I noticed the lock was gone and I was able to work in the document again.

Frank

Just a side note for you. You can unlock the file if you log in as admin in the /alfresco extension instead of the /share. You don't have to restart the service.

Hi,

Sorry for digging up an old post, but I have a quick question for you.

How do I login to the /alfresco extension

The normal site is  http://xx.xx.xx.xx:8080/share/page/site/xxxxx

I tried logging into The http://xx.xx.xx.xx:8080/alfresco ,

This is what is displayed

Adrian

Hi ESWBitto,

You mean I can unlock it within Alfresco? That is not an issue. Also within /share you can unlock it. The problem is beneath. Alfresco shows it is no longer locked and when I try to open it Excel itself says the file is read-only and being used by another.

We experience this quite often and users are complaining. The only solution so far is to upload a new document and delete the old one.

Regards,

Frank
