I am following these instructions to create a custom aspect:

http://knol.google.com/k/customize-alfresco#

However, after uploading custom-model.xml there is no checkbox shown in properties that says "Model Active".

How do I made my custom model active?

Hi,

I guess you are uploading file in wrong location to make it content model.
You have to add it in
Company Home > Data Dictionary > Models

then only you will see the checkbox.

I believe I have uploaded the model xml to the correct location.

Here is a screenshot:

custom-model.xml is inside the Content Items for Model.

However, if I look at the properties, there is no "Model Active" checkbox.

I am using Alfresco Community on Windows XP.

Try editing that file.

What I did is edit it, delete a few meaningless characters, and save.

Then I went back to Modify Properties…but still no checkbox or Model Active.

Today, I also tried updating to the lastest build – 3.4d – but it didn't make a difference.

However, I went and tried using the manual method described here:
http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Data_Dictionary_Guide#Step_by_Step_Model_Definition

Using my same files for the new aspect(Expiration Date) I got it to work!
I can add and edit the aspect and its value.

However, it seems like having the checkbox would make it all that much easier that having to work at the filesystem level.

In Alfresco 3.4 (Navigating to Company Home > Data Dictionary > Models) when trying to upload your content model, there are additional options than in previous versions.

I uploaded my content model, specified the following three values, and I can see the Model Active checkbox.
Type: Content
Encoding: UTF-8
Content Type: XML

Fixed

I had all those selected except for Type:Content  (the default is Type:Article).

Now I see the Model Active checkbox!

Thank you so much!
