Managing User Tasks using third party server.

In BPM the Process Engine and the user task management are loosely coupled. There even exist a standard called WS-HumanTask for the User Tasks server.
We would like to apply the above pattern using Activiti. As far as we understand, this means replacing the existing TaskService with our own implementation.
Can the TaskService be replaced? If so can you please share how?

By taking the source code an changing it… It is not 'pluggable' afaik.
