Locally set permissions and external users

I have a site which various people have access to, including an external user. Within this site, I have created a folder that does not inherit the site permissions but has locally set permissions. I want the external user to have access to this folder, but when I go to add users, external ones don't appear in the search results. Is there a way around this?

This post is quite old so it may be that subsequent releases of Alfresco in the cloud addressed this problem, but I can not reproduce it today. I can go into a folder, manage the permissions, and do a search for users that includes users in my network as well as users that are not in my network but have been invited to the site.
