Links between documents

Hi,

I was wondering if it was possible to create links / shortcuts / aliases (or whatever you name it) between documents. I didn't find a way to do it in the web client: should it be a feature request or did I miss something ? Are there any fundamental reasons why it should not be possible ? How would it be managed by CIFS / Webdav ?

Thank you in advance for any answer,

Jean

Shortcuts are available in V1.1 and Web Client

Great news, but I didn't find them… I only see the "shortcuts" box on the left column, but how should I use it ?
Moreover, I am interested by the possibility to just create a link in some space to a document in another space.

Select the Details view of a document.
In the resulting view, select Actions - Create Shortcut

Thank you for the tip. It's like a "bookmark" functionnality as I understand it (can be very useful).

My initial question was more about the ability to create a link in some space that points to a real document in another space. Is it possible ? Or is it planed to be ?

Hi,

Yes, you can create a link from one document to another but you will have to create a custom model to do so.

In the data dictionary you can define associations between types in the repository, then if configured to, an association picker control will appear in the web client allowing you to select another document in another space.

Have a look at the data dictionary guide in the wiki for examples on how to do this: http://www.alfresco.org/mediawiki/index.php/Data_Dictionary_Guide.

Hi Gavin,

As far as i understand, linking should be done through defining a content, adding an aspect to id, and define the content to which it links.
But it seems to be some heavy process, just to define a link.

Am i right, or is there another easier way to define shortcut on the webclient ?

I don't know yet how to define the link through a custom model, but i was just wondering how webclient should behave when it's defined.

By the way, have anyone defined the link aspect in the custom model ? It should be a great help as i don't understand how to define it in a proper way.

Laurent.

Hi all,

Does anyone have defined the link aspect in the custom model ?

I understand what you mean - you want the ability to create an arbitrary association between a document and any other document. We should add a task to JIRA for this (there may be one already - but i couldn't see it…)

FYI for 1.3 we have already implemented "Paste as Link" which creates a "shortcut" to a document or folder that lives in a folder like any other object e.g. very similar to the "Create Shortcut" functionality in Windows Explorer: http://www.alfresco.org/jira/browse/AWC-49

Thanks,

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Paste as a link seems to answer very well to the needs.
I'll wait for v1.3 to use it.

Thanks a lot,

Laurent.
