Current each 'user' includes some fields, such as username, first name, last name, email address, etc.

Is it possible to add a new field (e.g.,  mobile phone number or facebook id) to a user? If so, how to do it?
Note: It would be great if we can configure alfresco to do it, not change alfresco source code and database tables to do it.

mrogers,

Sorry, I am an alfresco newbie.
Could you give me more details on how to 'configure a new property in the person type'? A reference URL or screenshot are very welcome and appreciated!

Extend the Person content type to include your new properties.  Then update and/or customize the proper configs/webscripts/etc.. so that your property is captured and exposed in the manner that you're expecting.

If you're new to Alfresco I'd recommend that you purchase Jeff Pott's Developer Guide Book or possibly any of the newer texts that are out today.  Here's a link to the Developer Series texts that he has produced: http://ecmarchitect.com/alfresco-developer-series.
