Is document stored in Database or in alf_data

Hi All
  Like to have advice
During Prof of concept presentation, if some one ask me this question
" In Alfresco is the document  stored in alf_data on in Database"
If say it is stored in "alf_data", they will assume that a backup of alf_data is only needed
If I say I need to have the database to retrieve the contents, they will say that Data is in the database and not in "alf_data" .
How should I put it, Advice requested
