Installing Alfresco CE on my web host

Hi,

How do I go about installing Alfresco CE 3.3g on my Linux web host? I generally only have access to my web host system via a web-based control panel. I also have command-line access (using Putty) but I have no idea what to type, and don't have X11 (I guess I'd know it if I had!)

I have managed to establish that my web host system is running Linux (but don't know which variant/version), JDK 1.5, MySQL 5, PHP 5.

Does Alfresco run on that? The "Installing Alfresco on Red Hat Linux" instructions indicate Red Hat Linux + JDK 6.

My local system is my Windows XP laptop. I have successfully installed Alfresco CE locally and what I'd like to do is transfer my site back-and-forth between my localhost system and my web host system from time to time.

Many thanks for any help with this.

Stefan

No you can't run 3.3 on a 1.5 JVM.   You could run an old version like 3.2.

You should be able to install alfresco locally and then transfer Alfresco's files by putty.

Hi mrogers,

Thanks. Just so I understand correctly, are you saying can I simply transfer (FTP?) the Alfresco installation on my local (C:\Alfresco folder on Windows XP) system to my web host (Linux)?  Does it have to be via Putty, or can I simply use an FTP client like FileZilla?

More specifically, if I want my remote Alfresco installation to be in a subfolder can I just copy it there? My domain is http://www.aaltenvoogd.com, but I want to keep that site live for a little longer, so was thinking of something like http://www.aaltenvoogd.com/alfrescotrial (not a live link).

Would that work?

Many thanks.

Hi,

I'm still stuck on this topic, i.e. how to install Alfresco on my Linux web host - the post from mrogers seemed to suggest that I could transfer my local installation (on Windows XP) to my web host - haven't tried it yet as I'm a little paranoid about it!

Can anyone confirm whether this is possible? i.e. simply transfer C:\Alfresco to my web host? Can I just FTP the whole directory?

I would really appreciate an answer as it'll help me to decide which way to go - Alfresco or something else.

Many thanks!

Stefan

Have you confirmed your web host allows you to run an application server such as Tomcat? ARe you aware that Alfresco won't run with Apache Web Server on it's own?

Sorry if this is obvious to you, but a lot of people trip over this first hurdle.

Thanks,
Mike
