Install doesn't go past splash screen in Linux

I am trying to install Alfresco (alfresco-community-3.4.d-installer-linux-x64.bin) on a Linux machine remotely. The client machine is Windows 7 runnung Xming and PuTTy. When I start the installer, I see the splash screen, but nothing happens after that. I have tested the basic X11 installation by running xclock, which runs fine. Any ideas on how to solve this issue?

Another piece of information that might be useful is that my connection to the remote machine is over a VPN. I tried the exact same install with another remote machine which doesn't require a VPN connection and the install indeed moves forward after the splash screen (I see a dialog to choose a language). So I am guessing that the VPN connection has something to do with my problem.

Also, are there any instructions to do the complete install without X11?

Thanks.

What about trying to run the installer from the ssh terminal?

You can do a chmod + x "the installer file name.bin"
then ./"installer file name"

This will guide you through the text based installer, will ask you the same questions and install fine.
