in-place editing supported?

I'm in some doubt whether in-place editing is supported. What i'd like to do is to enable local editing of large document files on the Alfresco server without the overhead of downloading the whole document to the client machine.

I was hoping to see some sort of 'Edit' button in the gui, but all i see is shown in the image below. No, i don't have Flash on this particular client, but that shouldn't be a problem in this regard, should it?

Hi

In-place editing isn't yet supported in Share - you'd have to use the Explorer web client for that. It's something we're hoping to add soon.

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks Mike.

Am i right in assuming that the Explorer web client would therefore download the whole document for processing?

What i'm actually hoping to use Alfresco for is to implement a shared database on which remote workers can operate simultaneously. The big problem is that there doesn't seem to be any Open Source equivalent of Access (please correct me if i'm wrong), so i was hoping to kludge this by using a large shared spreadsheet.

Perhaps Alfresco is the wrong product for us?

It does sound more like Google Docs would be better suited to your application.

Oh dear - i was hoping you wouldn't say that. Google docs actually only supports spreadsheet files of <= 1Mb

Even more alarmingly - i might have to use M$ software! Sharepoint?

I didn't suggest our SharePoint module as you mentioned OpenSource solutions. However, if you're going to be using Microsoft Office you should try the Alfresco SharePoint module on the latest version.

Thanks,
Mike

My client is using Office, yes, but i wanted to present a solution using only Open Source software with browser clients.

Can you point me to any documents describing integration with Office products, particularly Excel?

There's a wiki article about the Office add-ins here: http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Microsoft_Office

However, the "new" way is to work with our SharePoint protocol module, which lets you work with the built-in Office collaboration tools. The Microsoft web site would probably be the best place to learn about those!

Finally, I believe there are some good resources if you sign up for the Content Community: http://www.alfresco.com/community/register/

Thanks,

OK Mike, thanks. I'll look at some of those docs.

Can we stay in touch from a sales point of view? Bear in mind what our key use case is - shared access to a spreadsheet containing (afaik) around 20,000 rows and 10 columns.

If this can't be done, please let me know. Otherwise, i'll need to put up a prototype to show the client pretty soon.
