In 3.3,best way to batch upload doc with meta properties?

hi all
what would be the best way of doing batch document uploading to alfresco 3.3 together with meta properties, in a programmatic manner?
I have been trying to use Webdav but i am unable to set the meta data such as author, descriptions fields using proppatch.

any help appreciated.

Thx for the reply tommorris. and yes, i came across the tool mentioned.
However i am not able to find any documentation on how to perform the import. and does it recursively ingest the entire folder? can I set up a cron job or sth?
Can you please point out?

it seems bulk import ver 0.6 is not working with Alfresco 3.3. the following exceptions occurred during initialization.
