importing EXIF data for 'bulk uploads'

I am evaluating the use of Alfresco at my company for primary use as a photo/video CMS. There is one problem I have not been able to overcome so far.

When copying jpeg files through the WebDAV folder or through FTP, the EXIF data is not imported. If I use the native upload function through Alfresco it works great.
We have installed a module for that gives an action to "Embed properties as metadata in content" but when I run that action it gives the message "Failed to run Actions due to error: 08140422 Metadata embedding failed: writer: null".

Alfresco Explorer and Alfresco Share run an extract metadata action as part of the upload, however this is not done for the the other interfaces such as ftp and webdav.

The easiest way to get the your EXIF stuff extracted is to define a rule to "extract metadata" on newly uploaded files.
