Hey Teddy - The best place to start may be the tour of Alfresco video. Or you may want to check out our other resources:
We've created a page in the community dedicated to exploring different areas of Alfresco, our Get Started page. This groups our resources by what you're looking to do - integrate, extend, check out addons, etc.
You've got the right idea asking this community, as most people here have been in your place before! Other members should have some great suggestions.

Hey Kristen Gastaldo,
I am grateful for the feedback and gives me some confidence that this place is good source of getting started. I have a concept I picked from somewhere called "Workplace of the future". I want this place to be accessible by users on the network and also mobile users. They should be able to access their work area and start a process, approve a process, share documents and sign digitally their approved work.
As a starting point I would like to find out if this "work place of the future" can be created using Alfresco and my first application i want built is an monitoring and evaluation system that updates various indicators with yes or no on a selected subject matter and this information approved or verified by another person in the workflow.
Thanks again.
Teddy L.

To add to Kristen Gastaldo's reply - if you're looking for use case information, then you may find case studies from existing customers useful. There are quite a few linked here: Alfresco Customers and Case Studies | Alfresco
