How to avoid erroneous versions of MS-Office temp files

We want to run alfresco (currently testing 2.1 and 2.9B) mainly via CIFS. Most spaces will be set to be versionable to keep track of all changes (auto-version is set true). We do not need any checkout/checkin policy at this point. Up to this point we are fine with the given possibilities.

Saving MS-Office files results in improper behaviour. Word or PowerPoint document always will be stored as two new versions: One for the document itself the other one for a temporary file named ~WRL<nnnn>.tmp in word and <filename>.ppt~RF<cccccc>.TMP. With Excel it is even worse: we receive three Versions; two for the document itself the third one for a temporary file named <filename>.xls~RF<cccccc>.TMP.
Switching off auto restore, has no effect in word or PowerPoint, but excel will reduce to two version.
What has to be done to avoid this nasty version explosion!

You could make Word save the ‘tmp’ files on your local drive instead of on the network drive.
