hello,

i already have a folders hierarchy which represent all my documents (alredy categorized by folder sub level) on my pc.

i don't want to upload every document (i have more than 1000 docs), is there a way to upload all my document in one operation and perhaps create categories with the same names of my folders hierarchy?

thank's.

Use the samba connection temporary, even if you won't use it later it still comes in handy to import.

I meant the CIFS connection Alfresco also supplies.

Try to find out your computername, then in the Windows->Run box type :
\\insert your computername_a
and press ok.
That should show you some directories after you login with your alfresco credentials. Now you can copy directories and files in there. Word of warning, try limiting the number of files you copy all at once, start by doing one directory at a time at first.

Webdav is another way, but I am not familiar with that myself. Maybe someone else can step in here.

Another easy way is to use Alfresco's FTP server. By default, it listens on the default ftp port (21) on the server.
An ftp client like FileZilla makes uploading a directory tree very easy.
This will retain your folder structure.

If you really want to create Alfresco categories based on the folder structure, I guess you'll either have to script the Alfresco-repository or create an acp-file (zip file with embedded xml-file defining items) and import it.

*red15 thank's for your help.

*bartr i tried "ftp://localhost/Alfresco/" and i got an authentification popup then i put my login/passwd and then i got my directories. so it works like a charm.

i will install a ftp client (like filezilla) in order to upload my directories. creating categories is not essential for the moment but what is essential now for me is to be able to see and navigate throught my directories hierarchy according to my group.

i created a group called "designer" and some users belonging to this group so my question now is after uploding a directory called "DESIGNER", how can i make this directory only visible by the "designer" users.?

thank's.

Now you are entering the real setup of Alfresco.

Here is a link to the documentation of Alfresco :
http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Main_Page#Documentation

Otherwise we would be just repeating here what was already said there.
