Give user access to a single folder

We have a site with a large number of folders and documents. I'd like to give a user access to a single folder. As I understand it, the user must be a member of the the site in order to do this. The trouble is if I make them a member of the site, they automatically get access to everything. I know I can elect each root folder one by one and set it not to inherit permissions and remove the user, but this is going to take me hours.

How do I give a user access to a single folder within a site?

If you navigate from the repository  root folder structure you should be able to set proper permission only on single folder.

I can navigate to a folder within a site and give permissions to a user who is not a site member, but they have no way to navigate to the folder they've been given permissions to. They don't get the link at the top of the site dashboard for "Document Library".

Having to make the user a site member and then go into each root folder for the site in turn and manually set permissions to all but the new user is just not workable.

Why can't you create group and all users to that particular group and provide permission to group. If you do like this way then no need provide permission for every individual user ?
