Get the uploaded document in workflow

I have to make workflow that starts when is uploaded doc file and then this doc file must be converted in pdf, so my problem is "how can i take refernce of the uploaded file in the workflow", i know that this can be done with single JavaScript file but I have to do it with workflow.

Do you mean a simple workflow (rules & actions) or an advanced workflow (jPDL based)?
