External users fail to login to share (skip invite accept)

Login fails for external users who have been invited for an Alfresco Share (3.2r2) site but who have skipped clicking the Accept link in the invitation e-mail. That is, for accounts that have been created through invitation based on firstname, lastname and e-mail address by the manager of an Alfresco Share site.

When they try to log in they get:
Failed to Login
The remote server may be unavailable or your authentication details
have not been recognized.

Such accounts are set to "enabled" so that's not the issue. Using the Alfresco node browser I tried to find any differences of the external account with a new user created as administrator but I failed to find anything that might explain why logging in with the external account fails.

My questions are:
1. Am I right about the above?
2. Is this as it should be?
3. How can an administrator remedy this situation? That is, what can an administrator do to an account with which logging in doesn't work, but which looks good otherwise.

Accepting the invitation does two things.
a) It enables the account if its not already enabled and
b) it adds the invitee into the share site.

Your users should be able to log on if their accounts are enabled, however they would not be able to use the Share Site.
