error starting Virtual server

I am trying to install Alfresco community WCM 2.1 version. I extracted the zip file inside Alfresco folder and trying to run but it gives following output on console.

WCM requires two separate instances of Tomcat:  one, to host the Alfresco application itself, a second, which is used to support our preview services (Virtual Tomcat).

It looks as though you've attempted to install virtual tomcat *inside* your existing tomcat - for example, /virtual-tomcat/conf/alfresco-virtserver-context.xml should be its own, entirely separate instance of tomcat.

Try separating out the installation of the virtualization server from the tomcat you are installing Alfresco on …  you can also try and pre-built installers to see how the eventual dir struct should look.

Lastly, I recommend using the 2.1 Enterprise Eval if you are doing any sort of POC … the current Community code line is already starting to get changes related to our 3.x dev effort - if you want a stable 2.1 platform, the 2.1 Enterrpise is the one that we certify for production use (Community codeline races forward with new features; Enterprise codeline branches and stablizes a known good version of Community and over time tends to fall behind in terms of dev because new features go into Community first).

I am in a similar situation, but could able to start the server (two instances). But the content repository is set as read-only (as per the log), and the default content space "Web Projects" and "Web Forms" are not being created.

Any thoughts on this would be helpful.

There are two installables:

*  Alfresco ECM

*  WCM add-on

The WCM add-on amongst other things installs the separate tomcat instance for the virtualization server and configures the bootstrap config to enable the default web projects and web forms space.

If there is something amiss, another way to get started is to use our pre-built installers.  You can then see the default dir structure that gets laid down and compare to what you have currently.

Let me tell something about my configuration.
I Extracted virtual-tomcat folder inside alfresco-community-tomcat-2.1.0 folder. So my alfresco-community-tomcat-2.1.0 folder has separate alfresco and virtual-alfresco folders.
alfresco-virtserver.properties file has following entry
alfresco.virtserver.jmxrmi.port=50501

and alfresco-shared.properties file has follwoing entry
avm.remote.port=50500

I am not changing these default values, I hope they are correct.
By the way inside extras\wcm folder there are a couple of war files, while virtual-tomcat\webapps folder does not have any war file. DO I need to put any war file.
Basically I am just doing what is mentioned in README_wcm.txt file and still things are not working.

The problem you are facing is that you are trying to start the server on (my guess) Documents and Settings (therefore the unkown protocol: and).

Try unzipping on c:/Alfresco, and you are done.
