I am trying to do something that feels as though it should be terribly simple to do with Alfresco Community 2.9:

1. Notify the users of a space that a forum within that space has been modified

A forum without an email notification capability seems like no forum at all so surely I am missing something.  Thanks in advance for your advice to this poor pathetic newbie.

On a similar note - I began evaluation of community edition 2.9B this week -
am I right in thinking that this is one of the areas where config files need changing if migrating from 2.1 > 2.9 ?

OK, I am completely stuck regarding email in Alfesco community edition 2.9  Smiley Sad

I can't get email to do anything. The config files I have from 2.1 don't do anything.
I've read http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Email_Server_Configuration
but it hasn't provided a solution.

To try and test things, I've added a simple rule to a space that should send me an email whenever I edit a file.
However, all that happens is dozens of lines in the Tomcat logs beginning with:

ERROR [action.executer.MailActionExecuter] Failed to send email to [my user name]

com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPSendFailedException: 554 The Email Contributor Group doesn't exist
……..

How do I set up the email contributor group?

The wiki says
Groups and Permissions

An authentication group, GROUP_EMAIL_CONTRIBUTORS , must be created to allow permissions to be handled at a high level by the administrator. …
Current default server configuration creates EMAIL_CONTRIBUTE group and adds “admin" user to this group.

Is it in one of the four config files?
custom-email-server.properties
cusom-email-server-context.xml
email-server.properties
email-service-context.xml
Or the User Management bit in the GUI?

You need to add your SMTP information to the custom-repository.properties file.  Take a look at this wiki page for guidance: http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Configuring_Email_for_Alfresco.  Effectively it states that you need to add the following lines to the custom-repository.properties file:

mail.host=<the name of your SMTP host>
mail.port=<the port that your SMTP service runs on (the default is 25)>
mail.username=<the username of the account you want e-mail to be sent from>
mail.password=<the password>

Thanks very much!
That seems to have done the trick.

For release 2.1, we had to put those same lines into
custom-email-server.properties
,
not into the file you mentioned…..
