Edit Online - Implicit Check Out, Explicit Check In

There's a change from 2.1 in the Edit behavior.
I expected "Edit Online" to work like "Edit" did in 2.1 when configured for edit-link-type=webdav.

With IE (and the Sharepoint object) in 2.1, it would do an implicit check out and implicit check in without creating a separate working copy.  Now in Labs 3Stable/Final it does an implicit check out and creates a working copy that requires an explicit check in.

Is this the intended behavior?
Is this configurable?

Is the workflow the same with CIFS?

I noticed this:
https://issues.alfresco.com/jira/browse/ALFCOM-2043
The error has gone away in 3Stable, but it is using a working copy.

let's just call it a "lock" 😉

Now in Labs 3Stable/Final it does an implicit check out and creates a working copy that requires an explicit check in.

That's the behavior for "Edit Offline", "Edit Online" AFAICT just opens the SharePoint URL (there's not even a javascript snippet as used to be the case in previous versions; IE/MSOffice seem to handle all the rest); and editing using the SharePoint Protocol locks the file just like when using WebDAV.

Are you talking about Labs 3Stable/Final?
With edit-link-type=webdav?

I am using 3Stable/Final and it works for me as I stated with Edit Online and edit-link-type=webdav.
It's different than 2.1.  Users now have to track down a working copy and check it when they are done editing even if though they didn't check it out.
In fact, inline editing works that way as well - clicking "edit online" implicitly checks out and creates a working copy that you have to explicitly check in.

My question still is, is this change in behavior intentional or is it a bug in Labs 3?
Is it configurable?

Hi all

I can confirm the behaviour described by steve.tekell
When the edit-link-type is set to webdav, using IE and MS Word 2007, opening a file with the "Edit online menu"
will check out a file, create a copy in the workspace that will contain the modifications made to the files when the MS WORD is closed.
They you have to MANUALLY check in again the modified file ; you get a new version and the copy-file is removed.

We are using Alfresco Enterprise 3.0.1 and IE - works fine with Edit On-line. However with Firefox it opens a read-only copy whixh does not allow editing as it does in IE?

Please help!!

It's because Firefox doesn't know how to handle WebDAV links - it downloads the document to your local drive.

This add-in *might* help (but I've not tested it): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/540

I still would like to know if this behavior configurable/fixable?

The problem isn't just with online-editing (and WebDAV), but inline-editable documents as well.

I want it to behave like it did before (in 2.1), where clicking on edit just edited the file.  Having to check in a file of a different name that you have no reason to believe even exists since you never checked it out, is another problem for usability.

Digging through the config files, I just found that the old behavior is commented out in web-client-config-actions.xml. Uncomment it and comment the new actions and you should be done.

itbeb, how did you configure Alfresco to use IE and Office for editing documents online?

Thanks!!

Sorry - never saw this post.

In your web-client-config-custom.xml you have to specify

<edit-link-type>webdav<edit-link-type> (If you use WebDAV - we do!)
