Edit Offline vs Checkout?

I'm not sure I understand why there are both "edit offline" and "checkout" features?  It seems like they do the exact same thing, except that Edit Offline doesn't ask you where it's going to put the working copy (and it will automatically download if desired).

You can only use edit online for text documents. And the aspect inline editable has to be added. Whether you edit online or offline (via for example word or excel), the document is being checked out and a working copy is being created.

Sure, but I guess I'm asking why do we have a Checkout *and* and Edit Offline feature?  It seems like Edit Offline simply checks a document out into the current folder.

Really it just makes it slightly more difficult to train people.  If I have a folder of documents in which I don't want people to check out into that folder (makes clutter), then I have to train people to check out documents into a different folder, and "don't click Edit Offline in this folder."

Edit offline and Check out pretty much do the same thing…..I think the real difference is Edit Offline is a streamlined, simplified version of the check out function for Share application

Choosing the working copy location is not necessary in the Share application because it auto-hides the working copies in the document library….It only shows them int eh "documents im editing" and "documents others are editing" folders.

This is not possible in Alfresco, because it doesn't have hidden files since it is a repository and not an application built on top of the repository like share.
