Duplicate Users

Our Alfresco system seems to have created some duplicate users.

We use email addresses as usernames, and somehow we about 30% of our users have duplicates.

For instance, we get:
Name                   Username
1. Tom                     tom@email.com
2. tom@email.com   tom@email.com

In the Alfresco Explorer, if I delete user 2 (the duplicate), it disappears for a second, but then when I refresh the list for a second time the duplicate user has re-emerged.

I tried deleting user by noderef using

utils.getNodeFromString("workspace://SpacesStore/63e44931-bef4-4d96-8671-e50dfaaf5e60").remove()‍

but it gives me the "use person service to delete person".

I also tried deleting by using

person.delete(username)‍

but the same thing happens as what happens in explorer - the user comes back.

How can I delete these duplicates? The users with the duplicate accounts cannot login (as I presume the duplicate user doesn't have a password set)???

Any help would be appreciated.

Furthermore.

In the node browser under user://alfrescoUserStore/system/people I have 86 entries. In workspace://SpacesStore/system/people I have 114 entries. So I presume these extra entries are the duplicate users??
