I am evaluating Alfresco to see if it can meet our doc management needs, and was wondering how to setup Alfresco to manage check-in/out and versioning of complex engineering drawings that are comprised of many (hundreds, in some cases) individual files, potentially stored in separate spaces?

If an engineer checks-out an assembly to make a modification, we would look for the system to also check-out all of the sub-component drawings used in that assembly, and automatically check the sub-components back in (with correct version updates if changes were made) when the parent assembly is checked in.

Is this possible, and if so, where can I look for advice in configuring this to work?

I don't think you will get this "out of the box".

But Alfresco does allow you to define arbitary relationships between documents and a lock service to lock documents.   You could easily add an action that crawls a tree locking as it goes.

Or you may be able to change permissions of a tree of documents.

That's two ideas to get you started although I'd suggest some more analysis on the relationships between documents.
