Document identification strategies

We've set up an Alfresco system for some testing - we're looking at improving our document management system along the lines of the ISO 9001 standard.

I've been looking at the ability for Alfresco to insert some kind of identifier onto Word documents in order to be able to locate the electronic copies of files given a printed copy. Ideally I want this to be unique across the system, so that effectively when you search for one of these IDs it's going to bring back one and only one document.

I think I can see how I can do this with a little bit of programming and/or using the metadata write plugin, but I'm wondering if other people have done something like that and are using that kind of strategy? Or is there a better way that I've missed to do this?
