zaizi´s response is, i think, misleading. Community (now labs) and enterprise editions are INDEED different. The source code is different and, of course, the support is different.
Broadly speaking, it is true that both have same functionality.
Initially, there is a community/labs version which is released and then, a few weeks/months later, an evolved and patched enterprise version is released. This last one is the enterprise version which is tracked and actively maintained. The source code of the enterprise version is not available for non paying customers.
Until now, some/all(?) of the patches for the enterprise version were made available in SVN HEAD for public scrutiny. The completeness and time delay in the availability of patches in SVN is nor defined neither there is a clear commitment from Alfresco that this will happen with 3.0.
A little more feedback from Alfresco in this area would be of help for Alfresco Community. The completeness and frequency of patches release for the labs version defines a playing field in which the game rules for the community users are defined. This community access would, for instance, allow the community to clarify:
- How to use and maintain the community/labs version
- Whether user contributions are possible/welcome and if they are to be merged in the general version or in SVN for general consumption
- Whether the community has to provide/create/manage an (external) place for Alfresco cooperation or Alfresco´s SVN is enough
- How Alfresco and the community can cooperate in this interesting product
I know that alfresco people are very busy with the development and release of the (fantastic looking) 3.0 version. I hope they can find a little time to clarify what the options are.
Anyway, keep up with the good work and congratulations for 3.0.
