Declare a record that lives outside of RM site?

It appears that in order to declare a document as a record, that it must be copied/moved into the RM site.  I have a scenario where the client preference is to leave the documents outside of the RM site, but to still declare them as records.  Is this possible or on the road map?

If declaring a record outside of RM site is not possible, if we copy the documents into the RM site, how do we lock down the original version stored outside of the RM site.  Even if you remove permissions from the content, the site manager can still modify the document.  Any guidance on best practices in this area?

I did see one approach where a stub document remains in the original location.  The original content is replaced in the stub with a pointer to the RM version of the document.  The problem with this approach is now the content of the document is not searchable within that site.

The documents need to be in the RM site.   The RM site is overlaid with a lot more permissions stuff that is simply not present on a "regular" share site.
