custom properties in Alfresco 4?

Does anyone know of a current tutorial with steps for adding properties to the user (person) object? The only useful documentation on the process seems to be Jeff Potts tutorial for 3.4, which does not work (and, in fact, seems to break things) in 4.0e. Has anyone successfully extended these properties in Alfresco 4? I'd be really interested to hear how.

How are you adding the custom properties to the person object, via a custom aspect? Please post your current solution so we can see where the problems might be.

My initial solution was to follow this - http://ecmarchitect.com/archives/2012/02/27/1555/comment-page-1. It worked to a point (there were extra properties made available, albeit only in the nativeUser object as part of a long JSON-ish string) but broke NTLM Passthru. We have worked out a rather kludgy solution in house but it relies on third party software and will not really be relatable for others. All I can really suggest for others is that if you need properties on the user object other than the default, you may want to be paying a support license.
