Creating a Document Access Audit trail

I would like to create an audit trial based simply on those users who have accessed a document in a folder space.

I am using the 'out of the box' web client with a few customisations. I was wondering how easy this is to do - my thought are I would have to creating a custom content rule to achieve this.

As I am new Alfresco I was wondering whether this would be the easiest approach or can this already be achieved without customisation?

Any ideas/ suggestions much appreciated.
