Strongly recommend signing up to Alfresco Content Community at http://www.alfresco.com/community/register/. There are presentations, walk throughs, pre-recorded webinars, white papers, case studies, etc. that provide a good over view of Alfresco ECM.

I have installed the Alfresco ECM 2.2.0 on Windows XP platform. When I try to create and run the Content rules in accordance with your reply, I get the system error happened during the operation: No transformation exists between mimetypes application / msword and application / pdf. Please advice.

Is openoffice running?
You could check this in the startup log.(alfresco.log)
Openoffice is responsible for transformation docs to pdf's.
Friendly regards,
Nick

You'll need open office running and Alfresco needs to connect to it when it starts up for the transformations to work.

I have created a new content button in share Document Library that creates a text file. What i want now is that the file instead of beeing a text file is a pdf file, giving a scheme to create the pdf or something similar. Does anyone has an idea on how to do this?
Tks

Drop a javascript and invoke the transformation javascript API
to convert the text file to pdf and delete the text file when the transformation
is done, or archive the text file to a separate folder

There is no chance to get PDF document from WORD better than MS Word can do it by himself.
Among online tools I would recommend 2:
http://convertonlinefree.com
and
<a href="http://go4convert.com" title="Online DOC to PDF converter">go4convert</a>
