configure e-mail without SMTP

Hi, is there way to configure alfresco for send email without smtp server. Any kind of suggestion are welcome.

AFAIK SMTP server is must in order to send emails.

Why? what's your requirement and why do you want to avoid SMTP?

currently, we don't have one since we moved to hosted exchange. so i was thinking if there is way like PHP to use default mail client.

So why can't you use your hosted exchange? 

If you can connect via php then the equivalent settings should work for alfresco,   There's no magic different way of sending email.
