Internet Explorer 9 is always failing when I try to use it to upload to alfresco 4.0.d community edition (running on tomcat).
I typically use firefox or safari and they work fine but I have a few other users who prefer IE9.
Any solution to this? Is there some setting I need to tweak?

What exactly is failing?
Are you trying the flash uploader, the HTML5 uploader, or uploading one file at a time?
Do you get an error message in IE?
Do you get an error message in Alfresco?
Do you get an error message in your tomcat log?

I know IE 9 does not support drag and drop, but I try to upload one at a time I get
Status 0/1 uploaded (1 failed)
using the flash uploader
Status 0/1 uploaded (1 failed)

Could be the upload from the browser that is failing (try disabling Flash in the browser and using the regular HTML uploader).
Could be a timeout (try a really small file).
Could be something on the server (look in your tomcat log).

It might be an IE security setting. Try to register the URL of your alfresco share installation as belonging to the "local intranet" in IEs security settings.
