Can't 'update' a file to a new version

I reported this as a bug here
https://issues.alfresco.com/jira/browse/ALFCOM-1839
but maybe I'm doing something wrong and somebody can put me right…

On Alfresco Version: Community Network - v2.9.0 (B 683)
If i try to "update" an file to a new version, by clicking the file's "update" action,
I get  a screen with:

"Update <file name>
Update a document on the repository with content from your computer.

Local copy location
1. Locate and upload your document to the repository.
Location: ________________________ [browse button]

2. Click upload [Upload button]

I can browse to a <new file>, select it, and click OK.

The message "<new file> was uploaded successfully" appears at the foot of the screen.

However, when I return to the same, the original file is still in place, no update appears to have taken place.
Versioning is enabled. No change to version number occurs.

Can no-one else in the Alfresco 'community' replicate this behaviour?
Or tell me if I'm doing something wrong with my "versioning" settings?

If I try and "check out" a file instead, into the same space, I just get an error about "Unable to check out Content Node due to system errorSmiley Very Happyuplicate child name not allowed: "

This is a complete blocker to me -
I'm trying to set up a document management system, and it can't even deal with new versions of documents!

I've logged this in the Alfresco JIRA too…
