Can Outlook replace attachment by link to repository?

A client briefly described a feature of Outlook integration with a documents repository (maybe Sharepoint?). Here is this feature:

When a user attaches a document from the repository to an email, just a link to the document is sent, not the whole document.
I guess the whole document is sent only if the recipient belongs to a different company.

1) Has anyone ever heard about this feature? I could not find even a webpage talking about it.
2) Is it doable between Outlook and Alfresco?

Yes it is possible.
You can check the alfresco and Zimbra integration, may be you need to tweak the code.
