Can I use substring() function in expression?

Can i use substring() function in model expression.
Like in Condition:

${myString.subString(0,4) == "test"}

or I'd like to use beans in the expression, like:

${myBean.name == "Jones"}

ps: I'm not using Spring..

I have just tested, it works fine.. thx anyway…
