I want to preempt this and apologize if this is a ridiculous question. I want to bounce off the community here to see how plausible this might be. What I am contemplating is creating a script that would read some data from the store and do a comparison test on that data. In this case I am looking at dates. Depending on the result can Alfresco send out an email notification? Am I barking up the wrong tree and is there an easier way to do what I am looking to do? I thank you for any constructive input.

Yes its very possible. However how does your script get triggered? Running as an action or rule springs to mind first. Then what are the details of your comparison test? You may just be able to run a query or look at properties or it may be more complex. The final bit is to send an email you use a mail action.
