The Soft Delete (archived nodes) feature is the best way to restore a single file. Of course if you delete the node from the archive store then it cannot be recovered (just like if you empty your trashcan on the desktop).
There is not a specific way to recover a single file from a backed up repository. The easiest way would be to restore the entire repo from backup onto a separate machine, then Export the file you want, and Import it back into the old repo.
