Authentication for RSS?

I have a RSS reader both from newgator and another one.  Neither can read the RSS feeds and I don't think anything is wrong with the feed.  I'm guessing it's an authentication issue.  Author of the programs wants to know what kind of challenge I'm getting.  Says their software supports HTTP challenge response.  I am on OpenSuse with Share 3.3 f/g.  What kind of challenge request shoudl I tell him is being asked for when using an RSS feed, and is there anyway to make RSS's public even though a risk?

Thanks.

It's HTTP Basic auth and no, currently you need to be authenticated by the Repository in order to run the data webscripts.

Thanks,
Mike

Have you guys tried any of these RSS readers?  It works OK with browser based, but Newsgator's reader and Feed Notifier both error out even though the feed is OK.  They both claim they support HTTP Basic auth so curious where the gap is.  Do readers have the ability to overlook comment blocks about non-editable pages like it shows on the browser?

Thanks.

Also besides my request below, is there something that needs to be set in Tomcat to turn something "extra" off?  I know thru port 80 going thru apache or port 8080 directly thru tomcat fails.
