Alfresco WCM Configuration/Deployment Problem

I am really new at this software. I just started to learn about Alfresco about two weeks ago and I began to install the software just last week. I have run into a few problems and I am a little confused about how this software works still. Here is the task that I am trying to accomplish. Our company already has a web server that is hosting three web sites. The web server is using Web sphere HTTP 6.1 and we purchased the Alfresco 3.1 Enterprise version for our company use. We have one server that has been set aside as the Alfresco server and I have already installed the Alfresco, Tomcat and WCM software. I was able to install the FSR on the web server where the web site is currently located. The web site is structured in different directories, for example, D:\Department\www\htdocs_dev\about, D:\Department\www\htdocs_dev\contact and there are a few other folders where the site resides. I did not develop the web site so I have no control of changing how it is structured. I tried to create a web project and was able to get through most of the configuration, minus the part about the FSR server where it wanted the Source Path & Target Path for the FSR server I am not certain how this should look, but when I completed the configuration of the web project and I attempted to Import Bulk I could not select the entire web site directory and when I did just import one document "Contactus.html" and attempted to preview the url showed up as "http://admin.project1.www--sandbox.127-0-0-1.ip.alfrescodemo.net:8180/contactus.html" and the page said "Internet Explorer could not display the Web Page". I am not certain where I went wrong. The other situation is I do not entirely understand how the Alfresco software works. We want to be able to load static content into Alfresco, version it, allow certain people to edit it and only one or two people to be able to deploy it to the web site. How is this accomplished? Do we store the static content on the Document Management side of Alfresco or is it all stored on the WCM side? Am I supposed to use the Document Management to store the static content and then use the WCM to deploy new static content? I have watched a few webinars I am just trying to wrap my head around the whole concept of how the software functions.

Thank you;
