Alfresco 5 - Custom Metadata in Search Results

Can anyone point me to an example or documentation of how to extend the built in search in Alfresco Community 5 to include my custom metadata?  I have found some examples of earlier versions that point towards modifying search.lib.js and the getDocumentItem method but my version of search.lib.js does not seem to have that code so I am guessing it has moved somewhere else.  I have also looked at a blog post here (https://www.alfresco.com/blogs/developer/2015/04/01/adding-views-to-filtered-search/) that points towards extending AlfSearchList but it isn't clear to me what I would do there to add the additional data.

Any guidance is appreciated.
