Adding custom metadata, should I use doctype, aspect, rule?

Hi all,

I'm fairly new with alfresco and currently trying to find out how to do things alfresco way.

I need to do simple thing : adding custom metadata to submitted contents.
The property I needed to add consisting of simple text, date, and limited selection (combo box).

From what I get from reading online resources is that I must either:
- create a custom content type, or…
- create a custom aspect and use rule to apply that aspect to submitted documents.

Can anybody point me out on how to do either of the above (which one is better, actually?)

Definitely create a custom aspect and add it to the submitted documents.
By the way, there are several ways to add the aspect to already existing documents (scheduled action, content rule, script executed …).
