Activiti BPMN designer

I try to use the Activiti BPMN designer for creating workflows for Alfresco.
I have read through the Activiti user guide, but that does not help me any further (all technical descriptions)…

Is someone familiar with the Activiti BPMN desuigner or has a description (non-technical) how to use the designer?

Thank you for your effort to create the tutorial.
I have read a part of it, but I got stuck at some point. So to be able to go any further I need some clarification about a few steps.
