3.4 Tomcat bundles removed - why?

Lets start positive: Thanks to the Alfresco team for this new release! Bunch of new features in there I'm looking forward to.

As I always want to use an installation method that makes me feel in control, I have used the Tomcat bundles. As per Release notes they are now removed. Installers that throws things at you that you cannot deselect (like Java and MySql) feels kind of "the ms windows way". I want to be in control. So the Tomcat bundles had its purpose for us want to be in charge what does get installed..

I guess I still can wire up my own bundles, but I must say it was convenient to have them.

Hi

The main reason was for simplifying dependencies, particularly with the new installers.  The difference between the Tomcat bundles and the WAR bundles were minor (really, just that one had Tomcat in), plus making sure we were distributing a good copy of Tomcat that was not the same as the slightly customized one in the installers.  It should be almost as easy as before - there's just the extra step as copying the contents of the webapps directory over your own Tomcat installation.

Those were the reasons - we're always open to suggestions to make as life as easy as possible for as many as possible!

Paul.
